How to Prepare for the First Mediation Session

How should a divorcing couple prepare for their first mediation session?

Amy Zylman Shimalla’s Answer:

They can prepare by gathering financial information, such as assets and debts and income information. They can begin discussing parenting schedules and how to address holidays, and school recesses. This is not necessary, but it can be helpful in moving things forward. If this is intimidating, or the parties are not comfortable, they can come to the first session and the mediator will discuss with them what information they need to gather. They will have homework to complete for the next session.
