How to Choose the Right Mediator or Arbitrator

How does someone choose the right mediator or arbitrator?

Amy Zylman Shimalla’s Answer:

The parties should check into the mediator or arbitrator’s credentials to assure they have significant experience. Generally, a mediator who is a lawyer is going to be able to educate the parties about the issues they need to address. When choosing an arbitrator, very often a party’s lawyer will help them make the choice. Ideally, they want an Arbitrator with extensive family law experience. The New Jersey Divorce Arbitration Association is a good source of trained arbitrators. Likewise, if the parties consult with lawyers they will provide recommendations for mediators. There is also a great deal of information online.
